Farewell t0 2009

This is one of my favorite photo of my babies and a constant reminder of how lucky I am as a mom! 2009 was a transition year as I conclude 14 years of life as an expat and return to the US to settle down with the kids as we integrate our lives into mainstream America. While we’ve had extraordinary experiences living, traveling and making friends all over the world, at the end, I treasure the simple pleasures of watching Derek play basketball at a tournament and learning to bake with Emily! This is also the year I trade in my passport for a Rachel Ray cookbook! No more life on the road as a single mom, having to make the tradeoff between making an important meeting in San Jose or making a parent teacher meeting at school. 2009 was also the toughest year of my life trying to re build my family as Derek had been floating around the US, China and India without roots for two years while I was on assignment in India. I’ve had to find a new job in the US, move Derek from China, Emily from India plus two houseful of furniture and two dogs to Palo Alto. The greatest challenge came when I realized we have to move again to San Jose so Derek can be closer to the school he chose two month after we settled down in Palo Alto! Within 30 days, I made a decision to buy a house in San Jose, break the lease in Palo Alto, take a leave of absence. I transferred Emily to a private school and became a full time mom. Looking back at all the decisions I made to get us to where we are, I truly believe we are exactly where God wants us to be – together as a family in South San Jose! I look forward to start a new chapter of my life in the new decade a better mom and a more fulfilled and well rounded person! Life is not glamorous as a full time mom, I get up early to prepare the kids’ breakfast, pack their lunches then the day is spent driving them around, going to the store, running errands, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and taking care of the dogs. There are days I marvel at how little I get done and yet I don’t any any complaints because I love being mom to my two babies and I treasure this special time I have with them to bond as a family and to be there for them every day! As we head into a new decade we are beginning a new chapter of our lives in California. We are making new friends as well as reuniting with old ones from India and China. I pray to God to give me the peace, patience, strength and wisdom to be a good mom to my two teenagers and I know He has already equipped me with everything I need!

The Necklace!

Most Christmas' we would fly to Virginia to spend it at Grandma or Eiling's house no matter where in the world we lived. This year we had just settled down in our own home and due to Derek's basketball tournament schedule we decided to stay home and have a quiet Christmas by ourselves. For so many years I would get presents for everyone (including presents to dad from Emily and Derek, presents to Emily and Derek from dad...etc). The only presents I received were presents from Eiling. Two days ago Emily went shopping with Aunt Judy at Valley Fair to get something for me and she was so excited when I opened my presents! The biggest surprise came when I opened a little jewelry box and saw that Emily had gotten me a beautiful necklace with a cross pendant and I also bought her a similar necklace! The best part is she said now she understand the true meaning of giving!

More presents

Emily loved her uggs so much she put them on and was dancing around like crazy! She also liked the electronic tooth brush, her very own hand held blender - since we moved to the US Emily has really taken an interest in baking and cooking. I want to encourage this as food preparation has become quite a challenge when I was working. I can foresee the day when dinner will be expertly prepared by my lovely baby daughter when I come home from work! The kids also got money and Amazon money from relatives and a phone call from dad.

Christmas Eve

Emily and I spent the day food shopping and planning our menu. We decided to make an English Shepherd Pie, Pork Stew, Soup, and the best, big, fat, chewy chocolate chip cookies. The pie turned out great, I burnt the pork a bit, the soup was too salty however, the huge cookies were amazing! I couldn't believe how much butter went in there but we didn't care! We decided to open presents after dinner instead of waiting till Christmas day.

Emily all grown up!

I still remember walking around Taikoo Shing with Emily during Christmas and she was still a little girl! 12 month later she's two inches taller than me and wears size 9 shoes!

Christmas at the Park - San Jose

At my friend Deborah's urging we went to Christmas at the Park in downtown San Jose and we had a wonderful time! We walked around checking out all the decorated trees, looked at the lights and took in the sights, smells and sounds of Christmas in San Jose California! The best part was the little break we took inside a warm cafe! We had the best hot chocolate!
